What are military patches?

Military patches of the United States are embroidered patches worn on some uniforms of the United States Military. They are used to show qualification, rating, or accomplishment in the military, and are also used as identification for personnel occupying certain assignments.

Different military teams and different types of military patches?

There are seven military teams that serve the United States. They are the US Army, the US Navy, the US Air Force, the US Marine Corps, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps. The United States Army is the land warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Navy is the naval warfare service branch, the United States Air Force is the aerial and space warfare service, while the US Marine Corps is the branch responsible for carrying out expeditionary and amphibious manoeuvres with the United States Navy, Army and Air Force. The United States Coast Guard is the coastal defence and maritime law enforcement branch. 

There are different types of military patches, but they can be divided broadly under seven categories, each representing one arm of the US military services. It is however more common to find patches for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coastal Guard than it is to find for the last two branches.

How to clean military patches?

If you must, wash your patches by hand and never by washing machine. Once washed, let it air dry. Drying it in the dryer will probably melt it. 

Also, never iron your Velcro patches. If it is a Velcro patch, it is stiff and clear and doesn’t need ironing, However, if it’s a sew on patch that is a little messed up, you can very carefully iron the patch.  To do this, don’t use direct heat. Instead, lightly spray the patch with water, then place a tea towel over the patch while gently applying the heat. And make sure you don't leave the iron on it too long.  This is because the thread is made from polyester material and will melt.
